Step-By-Step Class For Leaving Law & Finding Your Calling

Finally...a program that shows you exactly how to find fulfilling career alternatives for JDs and cracks the code for communicating with employers so your JD works for you.

Despite how you might feel right now, your background as a JD is transferable and in demand. That’s why you’ll find happy JDs working in such a wide variety of careers -- with no regrets for leaving law.

You too can be doing work you find fulfilling. The key is to first determine what fits you and your qualifications. Then it’s all about cutting through the clutter to get through to employers, and getting them to take you & your background seriously.

Helping you with all of the above is why I created the JDCOT Leaving Law class: a practical, step-by-step video guide to the transition that will spare you the time & frustration of going it alone. Below, I'll share how it can benefit you.

Hi, I’m Marc Luber. Here’s why I created the JDCOT Leaving Law Class for you.

I went to law school with the goal of practicing entertainment law. I’m a graduate of the University of Michigan, the Chicago-Kent College of Law, and a member of the Illinois Bar. A summer associate job in the legal department of a record company in New York City led me to conclude that practicing law wasn’t for me. After lots of soul searching, I took my JD, skills, talents and interests in a different direction. First, I spent several years working in the music industry (doing music licensing & more). Then I became a legal recruiter in Los Angeles.

I’ve been helping lawyers with their careers since 2003. As a legal recruiter, I talked to countless lawyers who were unhappy and wished they were doing something else. I knew their pain of realizing that law wasn’t the right fit. The feeling of not wanting to walk away from something you worked so hard to earn. Not wanting to “take a step down”. The frustration of employers being scared away by the JD. I wanted to help this smart community break through these emotions, discover what fit them and help them get it.

So I started JD Careers Out There (JDCOT), where I’ve coached lawyers of all stripes over career hurdles and produced the first-of-its-kind, award-winning video series featuring interviews with JDs working in a wide variety of careers. My life and theirs are proof that you’re not alone in wanting to use your JD in alternative ways – it’s possible whether you start right after school or after years of practice.

In creating this class, I’ve combined the wisdom of my interview guests with my own life experience of going through career changes and breaking into alternative careers using a JD. I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t. I’ve helped lawyers from top schools and firms as well as self-employed lawyers from unranked schools.

Life is too short to be stuck in a career that doesn’t fit. The longer you stay put, the more you suffer needlessly. I’m here to help you – so let’s get started.

"This class changed the way I talk about my professional experience, legal background, and career goals. That more focused, composed communications ability impressed both friends & employers. Following this class, I was more confident in myself and in what I wanted. This clarity was invaluable! It led me to find the right job and be able to communicate why it was right."

- Scott B. Transitioned D.C. Attorney

"I wholeheartedly recommend this JDCOT course. The course helped me to diagnose my strengths, look at job paths that would use those strengths, and reframe my law school training. Marc is one of the most enthusiastic teachers I’ve seen, with a clear passion for helping us discover that our law training can be an asset rather than a liability.”

Here's What People Are Saying About the Program...

“I would absolutely recommend this course to anyone who is looking to explore new careers in a streamlined, well-presented way, as well as anyone looking to have a deeper understanding of themselves and their skill sets that existed before and were shaped by law school. The benefits of taking this class, both in the short and long term, have been unique to any other class I’ve taken, either in or out of law school.

After practicing law for about four years, I began to get the overwhelming feeling of "is this all there is?" I increasingly found that I wasn't satisfied in my field. Each time I contemplated branching out and leaving law, I became frustrated and was unable to articulate why I wanted to leave or how my legal background would be applicable in a new field.

After beginning this class, it became apparent that Marc's methodology was unlike anything I'd come across. For starters, the class allowed us to focus on the sometimes uncomfortable realities of why we entered law, what we struggle with, and what our desired future careers would include. A variety of introspective exercises provided me with clarity about my abilities and how they would translate outside a legal setting. Marc also employs different styles of learning tools to get you more comfortable communicating with other people about yourself and your goals.

Marc's curriculum allowed me to develop a creative expression of my background, skill sets, and positive attributes, and package them in a confident and comprehensive way. By the time I finished the class, I not only had a newfound confidence in my abilities to succeed, but I also had an idea of how my abilities fit into the larger framework of opportunities outside of law.”

- Susie Dent San Diego Attorney

"I would absolutely recommend taking this class with Marc. This JDCOT class has really given me the tools to start moving towards a career outside the legal field.

I was skeptical of this program at first because I didn't know what to expect and because I didn't know Marc. However, having gone through the class, it is extremely apparent that Marc has put together a well-thought out program that really helps guide you through the process of finding out what alternate careers might be a good fit for you.

The exercises and videos that are a part of this program logically help you self-reflect on your interests and strengths, which Marc understands are vital in finding a fulfilling career path.

If you are looking for job placement, this program will not do that. What Section 1 of this class will do and has done for me, is teach you to identify the right tools for you to develop your exit plan.

Although I found some of the exercises challenging, this program will benefit you in the long run because being able to identify your key motivators and strengths will not only help you now, but will help you down the road if you ever find yourself looking to switch careers again."

- Reina T. Transitioning Compliance Attorney

"Participating in Marc's Leaving the Law course was a great investment that I would highly recommend for any attorney contemplating on leaving the legal profession.

Ultimately, leaving the law is a tough decision that requires great self-reflection that should not be performed hastily. Marc's course does a fantastic job in aiding the students to take a critical step-by-step approach to help them better decide whether leaving the law is truly the right choice and, if so, how their natural talents can be better utilized in a career outside of the law.

Additionally, being part of the course with other attorneys brought a sense of community that could not be easily replicated. Knowing what I know now, if I went back in time, I would not hesitate to invest in this course."

Answers To Frequently Asked Questions

Is this course for me? This course is right for you: -If you are unhappy practicing law and dream of doing work you’d find more fulfilling. -If you feel that you’re wasting your life doing pointless & meaningless work and you want to find something that better fits you. -If you feel the practice of law requires too many hours and is creating too much stress, anxiety and/or depression. -If you can’t think of any senior people working in law whose career you’d like to have one day. -If you feel stuck, don’t know where or how to begin your next steps, but you’re willing to take action to get unstuck. -If you feel lost and have no idea what would interest you or what you’re good at. -If you’re allowing fear of walking away from prestige to stand in your way. -If you’re allowing fear of letting other people down by pursuing your own happiness to stand in your way. -If you’re feeling like a failure because you worked hard to get to where you are but can’t make it fit. -If you’ve tried to make a change but employers never take you seriously because you have a JD & they don’t know what to make of it. -If you’ve tried to make a change but your resume submissions end up in a black hole and you never hear back. -If you want to save time and frustration from what can be a challenging process. -If you want to make sure the next path you choose really fits and you don’t repeat the same scenario all over again. -If you want help crossing this road from a fellow JD who has achieved that & been helping lawyers with their careers since 2003. -If you want guidance from someone who has helped lawyers from the top schools & firms to unranked schools & solo practices. -If you are someone who is willing to invest in yourself, be honest with yourself, be willing to challenge yourself, take action for yourself and ACTUALLY IMPLEMENT.

The course is NOT for you if: -If you are confident that changing law firms to escape your psycho boss would resolve your frustration with practicing law. -If you love practicing law but only hate the billable hour requirement and haven’t yet explored in-house counsel positions, workplaces using alternative billing, or law jobs in government (then this may be premature for you). -If you are expecting “overnight results” with “very little effort/work involved” this is not for you. The effort and work will save you tons of time & frustration in the future, but if you just watch the videos and don’t do the exercises, use the tools, take action or implement what’s taught in the class, you will not get the benefits you desire.

As lawyers, you of course know that I can’t guarantee you results like a new job. But I can help you define what you’re looking for and give you the blueprint for success in making a career change along with tools, strategies, scripts for communicating, and step-by-step hand-holding.

What, specifically, will I have when I finish this class that I don't have today? First, you’ll know what kind of work you’re looking for, what you can contribute to that type of work, why it fits you, and how to articulate that. Second, you’ll have a step-by-step action plan for growing your network, meeting with people, getting their support, avoiding the resume black hole, and breaking into the path you want. Plus, you’ll be presented with scripts for communicating and get tools to help you through the exploration-transition process.

What if I’m only interested in taking Section 1 or only Section 2? You can choose just Section 1 if you like! That way you can invest less money up front. You'll save money in the long run by registering for both together, but it's fine if you only want to invest one step at a time and make sure it helps you. Section 1 will help you build the solid foundation you'll need to maximize what you get out of Section 2 and the whole program in general. Section 2 is offered on its own only to those who have completed Section 1. Even completing Section 1 by itself should make a world of difference for you.

How can I be sure to achieve progress? You’ll receive access to video lessons, PDF exercises, digital tools, and our online group (where I'll be with you every step of the way - you’ll have access to me & your fellow JDs in the program). The video lessons and website will always guide you to your next steps. You will have the freedom to work at your own pace and on your own schedule. There is a recommended schedule based on the experience of previous students. The system will default to that schedule for unlocking new content. If you wish to move faster, content can be unlocked for you by request. The default schedule is intended to keep you moving forward, yet also takes into account your busy lifestyle and provides you time to digest the material so you can maximize what you get out of it.

What if I want personal support and coaching from Marc? You can message me any time in our online group. I'll be checking in a minimum of once per weekday to answer questions and interact with everyone. You can also contact me directly to arrange private coaching sessions.

What kind of time investment will this be? You have the freedom to move at your own pace. Most of the videos average around 30 minutes in length and come with exercises. Section 1 has 10 videos and Section 2 has 16 videos (but less exercises).

When does the course start and finish? Enrollment is open until February 21 at 11:59pm Eastern. Upon enrolling, you'll get instant access to the class. You will have the freedom to work at your own pace, so when you finish the course is up to you. The recommended pace (described above) will be provided to keep you moving forward and maximize what you get out of the content. You'll have access to the program for 6 months so you can both consume the content and take action. If you register for only Section 1, you’ll have access to that section for 4 months.

What if I hate it? I’m so confident you won’t that I offer a Money Back Guarantee. If you conclude that this class is worthless to you, email me within the first 30 days of your registration date and I will refund your investment.

What if I’m older? This program will help you too. That doesn't mean ageism doesn't exist in the workplace - it can. But you can only control what you can control - and that's the part I'll help you with.

What if I’m not licensed yet? You'll have a different story to tell employers than someone who has experience, but the content of the class applies to you and will help you too.

What if I’m financially strapped? I don’t want to take money from anyone who doesn’t have it. If you’re overburdened by student loans and in dire financial straits, please get back on solid ground and then revisit this. In the meantime, you may benefit by watching the free video content available on JDCOT.

What if I am not in the U.S.? The content of this class is pretty universal and should apply regardless of country. If there are cultural differences, you will recognize them and know how to compensate.

What if I still have questions? Please contact me with any questions.
