Alternative Jobs For Lawyers – Consider A Career In Wireless Site Acquisition

If you’ve decided that you don’t want to be a lawyer anymore or you can’t find work practicing law, then you’ll want to consider alternative jobs for lawyers. As you’ll see by spending time here at JDCOT and by reading our eBook, 99 Things You Can Do With A Law Degree, you have lots of great paths to choose from.

Today we’ll learn about jobs that impact the wireless signals we all depend on for our cell phones and iPads. Entrepreneur Michael Jackson, co-founder of Cortel LLC in San Francisco, is going to tell us about jobs in wireless site acquisition.

Firms like Michael’s are hired by wireless carriers (ex: AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon) to secure new sites to host the equipment that receives and transmits the signals we rely on. He explains that wireless site acquisition consultants also secure the rights to add on new equipment to old sites.

Wireless Site Acquisition

Michael tells us that a law degree isn’t required to do wireless site acquisition work, but the industry likes to hire people with law degrees because lawyers tend to have the land use law, zoning law and real estate leasing involved as well as staying organized to handle the project management and business development aspects of the work.

In the full interview video, Michael explains all of the ins and outs of wireless site acquisition work and shares how to break in to these alternative law graduate jobs.

This is a preview of the video transcript on wireless consulting jobs.

Luber: Hey everyone – Are you looking to make your law degree work for you without actually practicing law? Today we’re some non-legal jobs for lawyers that are probably brand new to you! We’re exploring jobs in wireless site acquisition today on JD Careers Out There – so stick around!

Alright – As you may already know, at JDCOT we explore career paths you can do with a law degree – both in and out of law – and we do this to help you find a career that fits you – so you can love what you do.

I’m Marc Luber, the founder of JDCOT. I’m a graduate of the Chicago-Kent College of Law, licensed to practice law in Illinois, and I’ve always worked in alternative careers for lawyers – first in the music industry and then as a legal recruiter. I’ve been helping lawyers with their careers since 2003 and I’m excited for the opportunity to help you.

Today, I’ll be interviewing an old friend of mine from college, Michael Jackson – not the late King of Pop – Michael’s a non-practicing lawyer and the Co-Owner of Cortel LLC, a Wireless Site Acquisition Firm based in San Francisco. He’s got about 50 people working on his team – and he’s going to tell us what Wireless Site Acquisition IS, who makes a good fit for this path, and how to break in to wireless site acquisition jobs.

Michael, welcome to JDCOT.

Michael Jackson: Thanks, Marc! Thanks for having me.

Luber: Absolutely. Michael, can you give us an overview of wireless site acquisition?

Michael Jackson: Well, wireless carriers are looking to improve or obtain coverage in certain areas in any given city. My company, or wireless site acquisition specialists, are responsible for securing the lease rights and the land use permits for their wireless projects, their wireless sites.

Luber: They are looking to put towers up? Cell phone towers in different places? And you’re helping them – you’re a middle man helping them get that done?

Michael Jackson: Absolutely. And we like to use the word “wireless facilities” or “wireless sites” because many of these sites are often times on rooftops and we’re not using towers. So we like to say “wireless sites” as a general way of explaining those facilities.

Luber: And so you’re helping them find a site and then get the legal work done so that that site can exist in that special place?

Michael Jackson: Right. Every site needs the lease rights and every site needs the zoning or land use permits. And so we are so-called “experts” at securing those and that’s what we do!

Luber: Wow. So you’re not Verizon, you’re not AT&T or T-Mobile – you’re someone that companies like that go to to get this thing done.

Michael Jackson: Yes. Absolutely.

Luber: Huh! So what type of person is a good fit for this path, Michael?

Michael Jackson: Well, we have found that people who are quick thinkers, detail-oriented, people who have a pretty good level of communication skills and organization skills are good fits.

We also have found that lawyers – they seem to have those skill sets and they just seem to be better fits for this job. Again, we’re not hiring these folks to be attorneys – to practice law. But they just seem to have more of what we’re looking for to be successful at this job.

Luber: Very interesting. By crazy coincidence, since this interview was recorded, an old friend of mine, who used to work in BigLaw, started working for Michael. I didn’t even make the introduction – it just randomly happened!

In the full interview, Michael’s gonnna tell us lots more about what it’s like to work in wireless site acquisition, how to FIND work in this field, and why it’s a great fit for JDs. He also shares some insight into how you can have a great career even if you don’t pass the Bar.

You’ll want to join the JDCOT membership for access to the full interview and our library of career path interviews & transcripts to get your career on track. Check out what people are saying about JDCOT by clicking here.

Thanks again for watching everybody. I’m Marc Luber and I’ll see ya soon.
